Technique

All the glass on this website is designed and made individually by hand - almost anything that can be drawn with a pencil can be styled and recreated as a design on glass.
The decoration is sandblasted onto the glass and is permanent, and where necessary, the glass is covered with an invisible protective coating to repel stains and finger marks.

1 The design is created for the client as a black and white drawing.

2 Once approved, this is translated onto the glass, by hand cutting a mask on the glass - rather like a paper stencil that is used for screen printing. I'm always amazed at the incredible detail and beautiful, fine sharp lines that can be achieved with skillful cutting.

3. The mask creates a resist, and areas which remain covered will not be exposed to the abrasive effect of the grit when sandblasting, and will therefore remain clear.

4. The depth of the carving - as illustrated in the opaque glass above - is determined by the amount of time the glass is sandblasted.

The technique used is traditional and very simple but executed in a highly skillful way using the highly original, beautiful, contemporary, distinctive designs of Caroline Rees.
