The design is created for the client as a black and white
drawing.
2 Once approved, this is translated onto the glass, by hand
cutting a mask on the glass - rather like a paper stencil
that is used for screen printing. I'm always amazed at the
incredible detail and beautiful, fine sharp lines that can
be achieved with skillful cutting.
3. The mask creates a resist, and areas which
remain covered will not be exposed to the abrasive effect
of the grit when sandblasting, and will therefore remain clear.
4. The depth of the carving - as illustrated
in the opaque glass above - is determined by the amount of
time the glass is sandblasted.
The technique used is traditional and very
simple but executed in a highly skillful way using the highly
original, beautiful, contemporary, distinctive designs of
Caroline Rees. |
